2016 Harvest 9

It's a colorful box this week folks! We're beyond thrilled that the second succession of the spring broccoli has proven to be abundant and it's making another appearance in your boxes this week. We've been grilling the broccoli recently and it's amazing sprinkled with salt and parmesan cheese straight off the hot coals!

This week we've been trying our best to keep up with irrigation and weeding. Both of these tasks are extremely time consuming but we've managed to make a lot of headway. Even though it hasn't been as hot this summer it's been pretty darn dry so moving irrigation lines is a full time job! On that note, due to the cooler weather our tomatoes are developing a little slower than they did last season so it will still be a few weeks before they start appearing in your boxes. Have no fear though--the plants are looking healthy and the tomatoes that we've tasted are delicious! The future is bright!

This week we'll be putting in more fall crops and our first fall sowing of bok choy, tatsoi and spinach is on the schedule. The greenhouse is quickly filling up again with transplants again after a few weeks of looking quite bare!

Anyhow, we hope this week you all get to slow down and enjoy the farm fresh bounty with family and friends. Cheers to the summer harvest!

2016 Harvest 8

Howdy folks! We hope you all had a lovely week and have enjoyed this unbelievably comfortable weather. We cannot remember a July when the working conditions were so darn nice! The plants are happy, your farmers are happy and it's been a great week to be out in the fields. With the mellow temperatures the greens have been cranking but the summer produce has slowed a little bit.  There are a few cherry tomatoes starting to ripen with hopefully many more to follow. Cucumbers are forming, the eggplants are looking healthy and believe it or not--the second sowing of spring broccoli did not succumb to root maggot or gophers so you all have broccoli in your shares this week. We are stoked!

This week we wanted to give you all a heads up that our annual Rock the Harvest party is scheduled for Sunday, August 28th up at the farm. It's a thank you party we throw every year for our CSA members and local customers. It's a total blast--we'll  have beer on tap and our favorite bluegrass band--The Greenneck Daredevils (check them out here) will be playing a live show right in the fields! We'll keep reminding you over the next few weeks but we wanted to give you all a heads up to mark your calendars.

The next few days on the farm we'll be prepping beds for more of the fall crops that need transplanting. The weeds are a growin' so we'll be dedicating a lot of time to pulling those suckers up this week too. The onion harvest is coming up and we are thrilled with the size and yield that it looks like we'll be getting this year. Fingers crossed!

Anyhow, we hope you all have a wonderful week and get to enjoy the summer bounty with your family and friends.

2016 Harvest 7

Summer is in full force here at the farm and we are stoked! It can be easy for us to miss out on the simple pleasures of the Summer bounty when we are in full blown Fall planting mode. It's a good reminder that while our brains (and seeds!) are months ahead it's the moment that we've been waiting for all season long! Fresh greens, hearty roots, herbs, berries, zucchini, summer squash and baby cauliflower. We're thrilled that after today all of you will have received broccoli once this season despite the early devastation.  The fall plantings of broccoli looks healthy so far (keep those fingers crossed!) so hopefully this Autumn we wont need to divide and conquer the harvest list for the CSA. We strive to have all of the boxes be the same and it kills us when we fall short--luckily things are looking promising for the remainder of the season and we feel like Mother Nature is back on team Tumbleweed!

We hope you all had a lovely holiday weekend and are ready for another week of eating farm fresh bounty.
