Howdy folks and welcome to week 10 of your Tumbleweed Farm CSA. Dang it was a chilly morning out here. First time in what feels like forever that jackets and beanies were in order! Now the sun is shining and warming up the soil and if feels great. The crew got all the boxes packed and sorted and we are so happy with this week’s haul.

We hope you all enjoy the bounty and are able to relax with a few nourishing meals with your family/friends this week. Happy cooking and eating everyone.

Your farmers,

Andrea, Taylor, Pepper, Mazie and our awesome crew.

2024 Harvest 9

Howdy folks and welcome to week 10 of your Tumbleweed Farm CSA. We hope you all are staying cool and breezy out there! It’s felt a lot better this week at the farm with cooler mornings to at least give us all a break from the intense heat. Some crops are fairing better than others in the heat but overall we are really happy with how little loss we experienced with those triple digit temps. Irrigating is a full time job with moving lines all day but damn it is necessary and we are so grateful for the water!

This week’s box is good one and we hope you’re in the mood for Caesar salad, potato salad, roasted beet salad and zucchini bread!! Happy cooking and eating everyone.

Your farmers,
Andrea, Taylor, Pepper & Maize and our badass crew.

Harvest 9

  1. Potatoes— Potato skins and flesh are both very beneficial to human health. Fun fact—potato plants draw some of the highest concentration of macro and trace minerals from the earth. This was news to me!! They are high in potassium and rich in vitamin B6, as well as a fantastic source of amino acids, especially lysine in its bioactive form. Lysine is a powerful weapon against viruses such as Epstein-Barr and shingles that are behind rheumatoid arthritis, joint pain, autoimmune disease, and more. Potatoes also contain tyrosine, a chemical needed to produce thyroid hormones. So cool! Eat more potatoes folks!

  2. Celery—it’s rich in over 25 anti-inflmatory compounds and has a natural and healthy sodium content and is a great source of electrolytes.

  3. Rainbow Chard—this dark leafy green is high in antioxidants and important vitamins and minerals including vitamin C, K and A and a healthy dose of magnesium (which many people are deficient in).

  4. Dill—is great for digestion and helps with bloating. Because of its antacid properties it’s great at easing indigestion, gastritis and other inflammatory conditions.

  5. Romaine Lettuce—Romaine Lettuce—It’s high in folate (if you’re suffering from allergies this season eat this green up!) It’s also a good source of copper and vitamins A, K and C.

  6. Golden Beets—rich in folate, manganese and copper. Copper is very important as it helps make red blood cells and helps keep your immune system healthy.

  7. Zucchini—Zucchini is a highly alkaline food that is one of the mildest and easiest vegetables to digest. Zucchini is a great source of vitamin A, C, & B-complex as well as minerals such as iron, zinc, potassium, and manganese.

  8. Cucumber— If you are feeling dehydrated eat a cucumber! Cucumbers are hydrating and contain more than 50 trace minerals. They contain chlorophyll in their skins that’s bonded to B vitamins and vitamins A and C. And cucumbers support digestion and hydration.

2024 Harvest 8

Howdy folks and welcome to week 8 of your Tumbleweed Farm CSA. Damn it’s gotten hot out here! We hope you all are staying nice and cool wherever you are. We’ve been busting our butts in the fields trying to stay on top of everything and so far we’re doing it (though the weeds are catching up to us a bit!!). A few things to note— We had to pick broccoli on Friday to preserve it from the heat. So it’s a few days old (still way fresher than what you’d get at your grocery store). It definitely does not like this heat and it isn’t as happy as our earlier spring broccoli. Please keep that in mind if you are curious about the quality. We did our best.

Speaking of the heat—the summer squash and zucchini is cranking. The first of the season has made its debut in your boxes. We hope you’re as excited as we are!

Also- 3 cheers for parsley! We should all be eating more parsley due to it’s powerful nutritional profile (more on that below). I linked a recipe for a really delicious chimichurri sauce that I hope you all enjoy.

Enjoy this week’s harvest. The crew kicked ass this week showing up before 6am to pick the leafy greens before the heat of the day. We worked through the afternoon heat and this crew of ours had the BEST spirits even when sweat was dripping from eyebrows and the harvest list kept getting longer! We are the luckiest!

Happy cooking and eating everyone.

Harvest 8

  1. Parsley—This herb is an all-purpose pathogen-fighter; it keeps bacteria, parasites, and fungus at bay. It helps alkalize all systems in the body and includes important vitamins and minerals such as vitamins B, A, C, and K. It’s also a highly remineralizing food, especially for those low in trace minerals; parsley provides magnesium, sulfur, iron, zinc, manganese, molybdenum, chromium, selenium, iodine, and calcium.

  2. Broccoli— Broccoli contains many vitamins, minerals, fiber, and antioxidants. Broccoli’s benefits include helping reduce inflammation, keeping blood sugar stable, and strengthening the immune system.

  3. Lettuce Mix—A rich source of vitamins A, K and folate. Also a good anti- inflammatory leafy green.

  4. Scallions—Great for overall immune health. Scallions are a good source of vitamin C and a flavonoid called quercetin. Both can strengthen your immune system and help it fight illnesses.

  5. Kohlrabi— Kohlrabi is great for gut health as it contains both soluble and insoluble fiber. It also contains a wide array of antioxidants, such as vitamin C, anthocyanins, isothiocyanates, and glucosinolates. These plant compounds protect your cells against free radical damage that may otherwise increase your risk of disease.

  6. Kale—super high in antioxidants, contains vitamin C, Vitamin K, Manganese and various polyphenols.

  7. Radishes—are a rich source of magnesium, potassium and vitamin C. They have been studied and results confirm that they likely alter the way cancer cells reproduce so they may reduce cancer risk. They are full of fiber and for their tiny size contain a lot of health benefits. Remove the greens from these to help keep the roots crisp for storing.

  8. Zucchini—Zucchini is a highly alkaline food that is one of the mildest and easiest vegetables to digest. Zucchini is a great source of vitamin A, C, & B-complex as well as minerals such as iron, zinc, potassium, and manganese.
